#TwitterDown: Elon Musk has introduced temporary restrictions on reading tweets on Twitter.

On Saturday, Twitter users from numerous countries experienced difficulties accessing the popular social media platform, with some facing delays or complete inability to connect.

In the United States, the two most popular trending topics on the Twitter app are “Rate Limit Exceeded” and “#TwitterDown” among those who are able to use it. As of Saturday noon, the former had accumulated over 40,000 tweets.

According to DownDetector, reports of outages started at 8 am EST and significantly increased during the morning hours. As the clock struck early afternoon EST, DownDetector counted in excess of 7,400 blackout reports for the site.

raised concerns about their Twitter feeds failing to load and encountering an error message stating, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Moreover, certain users reported encountering error messages instructing them to wait briefly before attempting again, while others faced issues with the site’s inability to retrieve tweets.

Musk changes policy

Several hours after users started reporting the issues, billionaire owner Elon Musk took to Twitter and mentioned that the site had implemented temporary restrictions “to tackle excessive data scraping and system manipulation.”

In a tweet, Elon Musk stated that verified accounts are now restricted to reading up to 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts have a limit of 600 posts. Additionally, newly created unverified accounts are presently restricted to a maximum of 300 posts per day.

To increase its revenue, Musk initiated the provision of a blue verification checkmark to users who subscribe to the Twitter Blue service.

Subsequently, Musk announced through a post that he intends to raise the limit for verified users to 8,000 tweets per day in the near future. Unverified accounts will have a limit of 800 tweets, while new unverified accounts will be allowed up to 400 tweets per day.

A multitude of individuals expressed their frustration regarding the connectivity issues, resulting in the emergence of other popular topics in the United States such as “Wtf twitter” and “Thanks Elon.”

Merely a day ago, Twitter seemed to be limiting access to its platform exclusively for users who were logged into their accounts. It remained uncertain whether this alteration was an intentional policy update or a technical glitch. The majority of the issues reported on Saturday occurred on the website, accounting for 44% of the problem reports, while 39% of the reported problems were related to the app.

In March, Twitter encountered extensive service disruptions, marking one of the most significant outages since Elon Musk assumed control. During that incident, over 8,000 users reported experiencing disruptions to the platform.

In an effort to revitalize the platform, which experienced a departure of advertisers, Musk is undertaking a turnaround strategy by bringing on board a new CEO named Linda Yaccarino.
