The upcoming DC film, centered around a young man from Texas, is headlined by the star of ‘Cobra Kai’.
In the new trailer for Blue Beetle, Xolo Maridueña showcases a whole new set of skills as he portrays Jaime Reyes, a young man who must come to grips with controlling an alien suit of armor. The film is an adaptation of the DC Comics character and is directed by Angel Manuel Soto, known for his work on Charm City Kings. The script for Blue Beetle was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Of particular note is Maridueña’s portrayal of Blue Beetle, as he is among the few characters who will continue to be part of the upcoming DC Universe envisioned by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the newly appointed co-bosses of DC Studios. Following their takeover in November, Gunn and Safran are crafting an entirely fresh slate of films, with their initial project, Superman: Legacy, scheduled for release in July 2025. Despite Blue Beetle being developed under the previous regime’s plans, Gunn has confirmed that this iteration of the character will persist.
Last month, Soto affirmed, “We are integrated into the universe, we are woven into the fabric of the world, and we are part of the long-term vision they have been formulating for future chapters of the DCU.”
Originally intended as an HBO Max release during the time when DC was planning movies for the now-defunct streaming service, Blue Beetle has since been upgraded to a theatrical release and is scheduled for August 18th. This film arrives amidst a series of disappointments for DC, with the most recent being The Flash, and Warner Bros. is optimistic for more favorable results with Blue Beetle and the upcoming December release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The latter serves as the final DC film produced before the Gunn/Safran era took over.
