Daniel Ricciardo has surprised the Formula One community by making a comeback to the sport. After stepping back as Red Bull’s third driver this year, Ricciardo will return to the racing grid starting from the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 23.
In an interview with ESPN last month, the eight-time race winner expressed his desire for a “fairytale” ending to his F1 career by rejoining the Red Bull team he left in 2018.
His decision to join the secondary AlphaTauri team puts him in contention for a future return to Red Bull and adds pressure on Sergio Perez, who has been struggling with his performance.

According to sources, Ricciardo is willing to drive for AlphaTauri for however long it takes to prove that he has overcome the challenges he faced during his time at McLaren in 2021 and 2022.
The news of Ricciardo’s return was confirmed on Tuesday while he was conducting a tire test for Red Bull at Silverstone. It was during this session that his strong performance convinced the team to make the move.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner commented, “We are thrilled to see Daniel’s impressive form both in his simulation sessions and on the track. His outstanding performance during the tire test showcased his competitiveness. We look forward to witnessing his journey at Scuderia AlphaTauri for the remainder of the season.”
Due to his ongoing difficulties and the public criticisms made by Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko, Nyck de Vries’ departure from AlphaTauri had been expected for quite some time.
Last month, Marko acknowledged that Horner’s doubts about bringing De Vries into the company’s F1 program had been justified in hindsight.
De Vries, a former Formula 2 and Formula E champion, secured a contract for the season based on his remarkable F1 debut for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix last year. He fill in for the unwell Alex Albon and scored important focuses.

However, De Vries has been unable to replicate that level of performance in 2023.
By joining AlphaTauri, Ricciardo is returning to the team with whom he had a racing stint in 2012 and 2013 when it carried the name Toro Rosso.
Ricciardo’s exceptional performances during that period led to his promotion to Red Bull for the 2014 season, where he had a breakthrough year with three F1 victories.
